宇髄天元うずいてんげん is a major supporting character in the Entertainment District Arc. He is often known for …

1️⃣ イケメン : good-looking

2️⃣ 忍者にんじゃ (ninja): ninja

3️⃣ つま(tsuma) が 三人 (san nin) いる: has 3 wives

He retires from Hashira afterthe Entertainment District Arc, therefore, unfortunately, does not appear a lot in the later part of the story 😢

宇髄天元うずいてんげん誕生日たんじょうび十月三十一日じゅうがつ さんじゅういちにちで、いま二十三歳にじゅうさんさいです。

Uzui Tengen’s birthday is on the 31st of October, and now he is 23 years old.

宇髄天元うずいてんげんはとてもたかくて、身長しんちょうは198センチです。

Uzui Tengen is very tall, and his height is 198 centimetres tall.

宇髄天元うずいてんげん温泉おんせんとフグしが大好だいすききです。

Uzui Tengen lives hot springs and blow fish sashimi very much.

Tengen declares he has an oder in terms of how much he values people’s lives. Firstly, it’s his three wives (Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru), then, ordinary people’s lives, and finally himself’s.

He grew up in as ninja in a family of shinobi that was on the verge of fading out in 大正時代 (Taishō Era). Feeling impatient, his father forced everyone in his family to undergo extremely harsh training, which resulted in killing all the siblings except Tengen and his brother. Tengen’s brother becomes very cold and heartless. Realising this is not what he wants to become, Tengen joins 鬼殺隊 (Demon Slayer Corps).

派手はで (はで / hade)

What does 派手はで mean?

Without a doubt, 天元てんげん‘s favourite word is 「派手はで」. This word can be translated in many ways: according to Jisho.org it means ‘showy’, ‘loud’, ‘gay’, ‘flashy’ or ‘gaudy’. In Japanese, 派手はで refers to when people’s actions or what they say are glamorous and eye-catching.

How 派手はで is used in manga:

As you can interpret this word in many ways, in manga, the translation is quite different depending on the scenes.

もう派手派手はではでだ。

mou hade hade da

Really flashy-flash!

Here he says 派手はで to express how flamboyantly he could make the blood splash.

派手はでつかさどかみまつりのかみだ。

hade o tsukasadoru kami…Matsuri no kami da

I’m the god of glam and flash…The god of festivals!

Here, he says ‘I am the god of ‘派手はで” -「派手はで」is substituted with ‘glam and flash’ in the English version.

こっからはド派手はでくぜ。

kokkara wa dohade ni ikuze

But starting right now…Things are gonna get real flashy!

「ど/ド」 is with an adjective. In this case, it means ‘very’.

As you can see, 「派手はで」is often translated as ‘flashy’, it is not always the case.

ならば、おれ派手はでくびってやろう。

naraba ore ga hade ni kubi o kitte yarou

I’ll cur off his head with style!

Here, 「派手はでに」is translated as ‘with style’.

地味 じみ(じみ / jimi)

The opposite of 「派手はで」is 「地味じみ」and 天元てんげん does not like being considered 「地味じみ」. 「地味じみ」means ‘reserved’ or ‘modest’.

When 天元てんげん tries to take アオイ for his mission, カナヲ tries to stop him, to which he replies with this.

地味じみるんじゃねぇよ。

jimi ni hipparunha neeyo

Don’t be such a bore.

The original Japanese phrase 「地味じみるんじゃねぇよ」would mean more like ‘don’t pull me in a reserved manner’. The manga translation here is quite different and 「地味じみ」part is translated as ‘a bore’.

なんとかえっての!!地味じみなやつだな!!

nantoka ie tteno jimi na yatsu dana

Say something! You stuck-up pig!

Here, 「地味じみなやつ」(lit: ‘a reserved person’) is translated into ’stuck-up pigs’.

While, 「派手はで」is translated as ‘flashy’, it seems like「地味じみ」is translated in various different ways in manga.
