Have you guys heard this phrase in a meme? Today‘s phrase is ‘Omae wa mou shindeiru.’ The theme is this one: JLPT N5 Grammar Point – ている.
The phrase for today is by Kenshiro from 北斗の拳, and this phrase has become famous due to the anime and various memes.
Today’s phrase
Omae wa mou shinde iru.
お前は、もう死んでいる。
You are already dead.
Let’s look at how the ている form is used in this phrase.
This grammar point can express a few similar, but different things, including:
- ‘Currently doing’
- ‘Have been doing’
- Expressing current state / condition
Firstly, you will have to know how to conjugate a verb into the て form to use this grammar point. Once you get a て form verb, you simply add いる (or います). In many cases, this grammar point is used for usage 1 and 2, as shown in the examples below.
hanba-ga- o taberu hanba-ga- o tabeteiru
ハンバーガーをたべる → ハンバーガーごはんをたべている
I’ll eat a hamburger. I’m eating a hamburger.
nihongo o renshu- suru nihongo o renshu-shiteiru
日本をれんしゅうする → 日本語をれんしゅうしている
I practice Japanese I have been practicing Japanese.
However, in Kenshiro’s phrase, the ている form describes the current state of something or that something was left in a certain state. ‘死ぬ’ means ‘to die’ and ‘死んでいる’ doesn’t mean ‘is dying’ but it means ‘the person died, and left in such condition = the person is dead.’
Other examples of this usage include:
omise ga aiteiru.
お店が 開いている。
The shop is open.
開きます means ‘to open’. The shop opened and has been left open, therefore you can translate this phrase as ‘the shop is open.’
ane wa mou kekkon shiteiru
姉はもう結婚している。
My older sister is already married.
結婚します means to marry, so the older sister married, and she is staying so.
